A modular and cost‐effective high‐temperature superconducting generator for large direct‐drive wind turbines

High temperature superconductors (HTS) enable very compact electric machines with high power density. The aim of this paper is to study and improve an HTS generator based on the authors' previous 10 MW double claw pole design. An additional stator was added machine, increasing copper volume in generator, resulting a large increase Furthermore, inner stator, overall current density individual stators can be reduced, leading efficiency. modularity further improved through addition third its fault tolerance. efficiency machine increased from 94.5% 95% at output 11.5 or reduction stators, 95.6% reached while maintaining MW. Hence, newly proposed design offers potential density, same diameter low tape requirements, making cost-effective option direct-drive wind turbines.
